Hearthly Chimney Sweep is a Carson chimney company, and every visit we make follows the same order. The technician introduces themselves at the door, asks how the fireplace has been behaving, and lays covers from the entry to the hearth before any tool comes out.

Then the work goes top to bottom: cap and crown from the roof, the flue by brush and camera where it helps, the smoke chamber and damper, and last the firebox. Every part gets its photo at the moment it is checked.

Before leaving, the technician sits down with you and goes through those photos one by one. You hear what is fine, what to watch, and what needs work, and nothing is booked until you have asked your questions.

Gardena is a few minutes north of our Carson base, so Gardena visits often share a day with ours at home. A common call here is a fireplace the family stopped using long ago and wants back for the holidays. Long Beach has some of the oldest houses we work on, including Craftsman bungalows from the 1910s and 1920s with unreinforced brick chimneys. On those visits the technician spends longer on the mortar and the flue liner, and before leaving they show you exactly which joints or tiles they are keeping an eye on and why.

A sweep and a standard inspection on a single-story Carson house usually fits inside a morning or an afternoon. A tall chimney, a hillside lot or a camera inspection adds time. The technician tells you the expected finish when they arrive, so you can plan the rest of the day around it.
We ask for an adult at the start and at the end. At the start you tell the technician how the fireplace has been behaving and anything you have noticed. At the end you go through the photos together. In between you can get on with your day.
Let the fireplace go cold for a full day, clear the mantel and a few feet in front of the hearth, and keep pets in another room. If you have an older chimney report from anyone, leave it out. It tells the technician what was found last time.
Covers go down from the door to the hearth before any tool comes inside, and a sealed HEPA vacuum runs while the flue is brushed. The technician cleans the hearth and lifts the covers before the walkthrough, so you sit down to a tidy room.
Roof first: the cap, the crown, the flashing and the top of the flue. Then inside: the smoke chamber, the smoke shelf and the damper, and last the firebox and hearth. Each part is photographed as it is checked, so the photos follow the same order when you go through them.
The technician sits down with you and goes through the photos one by one. Each finding goes into one of three groups: fine, worth watching, or needs work. You keep a written copy, and nothing is booked until you say so.
When the house is being sold, after a chimney fire or an earthquake, or when the flue cannot be seen well from the firebox. NFPA 211 calls this a Level 2 inspection. You watch the footage with the technician at the end, with any cracked or shifted tile pointed out on screen.
The order is the same, with the gas parts added: burner, pilot assembly, thermocouple, logs, glass and the vent. At the end the unit is lit with the technician beside you, so you can see the flame and ask about anything that looks off.
Carson is inside the South Coast AQMD, which runs the Check Before You Burn program from November through February. On days the district declares no-burn, wood fires are not allowed. Gas fireplaces are not covered by those alerts, and the technician can tell you which kind you have during the walkthrough.
